Spider-Man Reprint Price Increase: A Taste of Things To Come?

2 Comments

A few days ago, I bought you news of the latest batch of Marvel Omnibus Reprints being reduced in price by Amazon UK to just £46.50. The first of these reprint, Amazing Spider-Man: Volume One, was released yesterday, and Amazon has put the price up…

… To £75.

ASM omnibus at Amazon

Of course, this might just be a brief mistake and the price might drop down again. Or it could be a taste of things to come. At the moment, other reprints – including Daredevil by Frank Miller, Uncanny X-Men: Volume 1 and Fantastic Four: Volume 1 and 2 – are still up for pre-order for £46.50.

But will those prices increase when they’re released?

We have to wait until 17th September, when the Uncanny X-Men goes on sale, to find out.

Also of note: despite being a brand-new book, this Spider-Man omnibus is only dispatched within 1 to 3 working weeks. Seems a bit lax, don’t you think?! Are they just covering themselves – and if so, why this product specifically?

Otherwise, head to Forbidden Planet.co.uk, which lists this book at £50.25.

UPDATE: Thanks for everyone who either commented – here’s looking at you, Eamon – or emailed me to let me know that, thankfully Amazon UK has dropped the price back down to £46.50. My copy (from Forbidden Planet.co.uk) was delivered a few days ago – and I love it. Let me know if you’ll be buying this beaut of a book!

Thanks to Peter Hardy for letting me know about these amazing Amazon UK deals…

Jonathon Hickman’s Fantastic Four (due out in October) has a massive 54% off the RRP, bring the £75 label down to just £34.71. The 800-page book collects Dark Reign: Fantastic Four #1-5, Dark Reign: The Cabal, Fantastic Four #570-588, and
FF #1-5.

And January’s Deadpool By Joe Kelly 1160-page omnibus is just £50.74!

And perhaps most importantly for those desperate to read those long-since out-of-print books, Amazon have them on pre-order for £46.50 each. These are: Amazing Spider-Man: Volume One; Uncanny X-Men: Volume One; Daredevil By Frank Miller; Fantastic Four: Volume One and Fantastic Four: Volume Two.

Once again, big thanks to Peter Hardy – and if you spot any deals I should know about, please email me!

The 1,160-page HC has an RRP of £95.00, but those Early Birds amongst you can pre-order it for just £57.00 (plus £1 p&p). But you’ll have to head over to the site before Wednesday 31st July… That’s right, you’ve got only a week!

The book basically collects together the first 30-odd issues of Deadpool Volume 1 (1997) – and then some! Here’s the synopsis:

“Wade Wilson is a self-loathing killer for hire — but he dreams of being a hero. So when an interdimensional organization reveals his destiny to save the world, is it the chance for redemption Deadpool has longed for — or is it too good to be true? Either way, with reluctant allies like Siryn, Monty, Weasel and the elderly prisoner Blind Al, and formidable foes like Taskmaster, Typhoid Mary and T-Ray — who carries a soul-shattering secret that could destroy Deadpool — the odds are stacked against the Merc with a Mouth!

Joe Kelly’s hilarious, brutal, twisted and definitive take on Deadpool is presented in one oversized hardcover! Collecting Deadpool (1997) #1-33, #-1 and #0, Daredevil/Deadpool Annual ’97, Deadpool/Death Annual ’98, Baby’s First Deadpool Book, Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #47 and #611, and material from Deadpool (2008) #90. This special offer is only for Cover B, but Cover A is also available for £63.65.

Neither Amazon UK nor ForbiddenPlanet.com have listed it yet. Head over to Forbidden Planet International to pre-order it now.

And I’m expecting a second volume to be released maybe in 2015 finishing off the series, depending on the sales of this first one.

The Greatest Stories Ever Told?

Leave a comment

Comic Book Resources have recently run a number of ‘Best Stories’ polls, as voted for by readers. You can find the homepage of these here:

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2011/10/25/the-return-of-the-greatest-stories-ever-told/

As I write this, a few more have gone up, but it’s a work in progress.

And for you Marvel Omnibus fans, there are quite a few that may be of interest.

Daredevil

Daredevil #32

There are some fantastic surprises here, especially – for me –at number one. But such a great surprise…

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2011/11/01/the-greatest-daredevil-stories-ever-told/

Jason Aaron

Ghost Rider #34

There are a few Marvel titles in this writer’s best work, but only a couple are collected in omnibus format. I’m busy reading PunisherMax at the moment, and it’s a fantastic run so far. Oh, and in amongst the results is Ghost Rider. Fighting a Demon Truck Driver. Oh yes.

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2011/11/10/the-greatest-jason-aaron-stories-ever-told/

Matt Fraction

The Sensational Spider-man Annual #01

Matt’s stories are a bit like Marmite, but I’m a fan of much of his work. Here, we have a bit of The Immortal Iron Fist, as well as some Invincible Iron Man stuff. And The Sensational Spider-man Annual #01 was just amazing. Seriously; read it!

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2011/11/16/the-greatest-matt-fraction-stories-ever-told/

And finally…

Iron Fist

The Immortal Iron Fist #16

Even more Immortal goodness here, with Brubaker and Fraction’s run peppered among the Top Five. As a follow-up, Duane Swierzynski’s The Mortal Iron Fist is also on the list, available as both a TPB and HC.

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2011/11/17/the-greatest-iron-fist-stories-ever-told/

So what do you think? Which other stories would you have put in the lists? And which definitely shouldn’t be there? Let me know below!

“The Art of War”: 40% Off Apocalypse!

1 Comment

Personally, I think Apocalypse is one of the best characters in the MU, and if you’re a like-minded individual, you’ll want to get over to forbiddenplanet.co.uk to pre-order the upcoming Age of Apocalypse Omnibus.

Enter the AoA!

The 1072-page hardcover collects Uncanny X-Men #320-321, X-Men #40-41, Cable #20, X-Men Alpha, Amazing X-Men #1-4, Astonishing X-Men #1-4, Factor X #1-4, Gambit & The X-Ternals #1-4, Generation Next #1-4, Weapon X  #1-4, X-Calibre #1-4, X-Man #1-4, X-Men Omega, Age Of Apocalypse: The Chosen and X-Men Ashcan #2.

The massive book encompasses the entire MU, and sees the death of Charles Xavier and the victory of Apocalypse. What more could anybody ask for?! Well, how about a wealth of incredible creators, like Mark Waid, Scott Lobdell, Steve Epting and Salvador Larroca?

Cover B by Joe Maduriera.

Until 7th SEPTEMBER 2011 – Yes, tomorrow – you can get 40% off, bringing the price down to £57, if you visit:

http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&products_id=66034

With an RRP of £95, its certainly worth pre-ordering now to avoid paying more upon its release in February 2012. The discount is for Cover B, by Joe Madureira, while Billy Tan’s Cover A is available for £63.65; I expect the price of Cover B to increase to this when the offer ends. Cover A looks to be that of X-Men Alpha, re-coloured for two of the TPB editions of the 1995-96 mutant epic.

X-Men Alpha

These aforementioned four trade paperbacks were issued between 2005 and 2006, and can be found for about £15 each on the web. To get the whole story would cost you £60; so this omnibus is definitely worth it! Oddly, it apparently omits two issues that were included in May’s Prelude to Age of Apocalypse TPB (http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&products_id=63534); very strange indeed! Can anybody give us a hint as to why those two are missing from the omnibus? Or will this change nearer publication date?

Cover A by Billy Tan.

Amazon.co.uk doesn’t have the omnibus listed yet, while forbiddenplanet.com has the Tan cover for £64.85. So it’s definitely advisable to get to fp.co.uk as fast as possible.

The omnibus comes at a particularly good time, with the excellent Uncanny X-Force series focussing on many elements from the story. First of all, X-Force went face-to-face with Apocalypse (…sort of) and his horsemen in The Apocalypse Solution… Then, most recently, they journeyed into the actual Age of Apocalypse!

Uncanny X-Force #04. Cover art by Esad Ribic.

Come back soon for Spider-man, the Avengers… and the War Lord of Mars!

Price list – June round-up

Leave a comment

As you probably know by now, the new price lists are up, with a few changes and surprises. Here’s the round-up of the released omnibuses; a pre-order price list round-up will follow soon.

Art by Steve Ditko.

Since the last list, a lot of omnibuses have sold out, including most of the older ones, like Fantastic Four Volume One and Amazing Spider-man Volume One. Obviously, these may be found in comic or book shops, or through auction sites like eBay. In fact, those particular two seem to crop up quite frequently on eBay (UK), though at the moment, only one FFV1 can be found at £82.25 plus postage and packaging. And no one seems to have ASMV1! But wait a bit, and perhaps they’ll be some more for sale soon.

Amidst a sea of ‘sold-outs,’ it’s a nice surprise to see Amazon.co.uk getting more stock in of Captain America By Ed Brubaker Volume One, at very reasonable prices (hovering between £38-42). None of these can be found on eBay or on either of the Forbiddenplanet sites. The follow-up, The Death of Captain America, can also be found on Amazon.co.uk for the great price of £30.77. For the third one, Captain America Lives!, it’s best to go to Forbiddenplanet.co.uk, who has it for £32.82.

I am Iron Man!

Forbiddenplanet.co.uk seems to have some variant editions of Invincible Iron Man Volume One at £48.75. It looks to be the movie variant edition, with the Mk1 armour (ie. the bulky one used to escape from The Ten Rings), which is a fantastic cover, albeit lacking a Kirby/Heck quality which some may seek. These older omnibuses are rare, especially variant editions, so it might be worth getting the omnibus at a good price.

Any fans of Daredevil will want to go straight to eBay, however. Most of the modern runs (Bendis/Maleev; Brubaker/Lark) are available at pretty good prices. At the moment, the most recent (Daredevil By Brubaker and Lark Volume Two) can found with a Buy-It-Now price of £35.50. You might have a job finding either of the Frank Miller omnibuses at reasonable prices, though. I’m still in search of Volume One myself (without paying massive amounts); 2ToneComics have one available on eBay… for £250!

Art by Jack Kirby.

A few omnibuses have sold out quite suddenly; Elektra, for example, has vanished completely from the “big three.” Amazon.co.uk and Forbiddenplanet.com have also sold out of Wolverine, The X-Men Volume One and Secret Wars 2, but Forbiddenplanet.co.uk has all three for £50.25 each. They also have Captain Britain by Alan Moore and Alan Davis at the same price; any fans of Avalon will want to grab one of these rare editions.

It’s odd that they haven’t got The Astonishing X-Men omnibus at all, but if you’re interested in Whedon and Cassaday’s tale of Danger, the Hellfire Club and the Breakworld, go to Amazon.co.uk, who have it for £39.24.

Finally, the latest omnibus, Captain America Volume One, with art by Jack Kirby, can be found at the brilliant price of £31.50 from Amazon.co.uk.

Art by Jack Kirby and Ron Garney... What a pairing!

You might also want to take into consideration Amazon.co.uk’s free postage and packaging when you spend more than £15 offer.

Remember to leave a comment with any bargains you’ve snapped up or if you’re selling any omnibuses on eBay!

“Has The Whole World Gone Mad?!?”: 40% Off Acts of Vengeance Crossovers!

Art by Alan Davis

Marvel’s July 2011 solicitations have been released, including a hefty 400-page Dark Avengers HC, a Marvel Art of Mike Deodato tome, and a Spider-man: The Death of Jean DeWolff premiere hardcover… and an Acts of Vengeance Crossovers omnibus!

 The HC follows the December 2010 release of Acts of Vengeance, which collects the main titles from the 1989/90 event, including Avengers #311-313, Thor #411-413, and Amazing Spider-man #326-329. But, with a massive 744 pages, further titles in the Marvel Universe-spanning crossover had to be collected together in this separate release. Totalling 752 pages, this omnibus will be available with two variant covers, by Alan Davis and Rob Liefeld, and collect… wait for it…

  • Fantastic Four (1961) #334-336;
  • Wolverine (1988) #19-20;
  • Dr. Strange, Sorceror Supreme (1988) #11-13;
  • Incredible Hulk (1968) #363;
  • Punisher (1987) #28-29;
  • Punisher War Journal (1988) #12-13;
  • Marc Spector: Moon Knight (1989) #8-10;
  • Daredevil (1964) #275-276;
  • Power Pack (1984) #53;
  • Alpha Flight (1983) #79-80;
  • New Mutants (1983) #84-86;
  • Uncanny X-Men #256-258;
  • X-Factor (1986) #49-50;
  • Damage Control (1989) #1-4;
  • Web Of Spider-Man #64-65.

In a plan orchestrated by Thor’s evil half-brother, Loki, the villains of the MU decide to take revenge on all those times when they’ve been defeated. Where else can you see Power Pack take on Typhoid Mary, Dr. Strange tangling with the Hobgoblin, Daredevil fighting Ultron and Iron Man teaming up with… Doctor Doom?!

Art by Bob Layton

Featuring the work of such names as Walter Simonson, Roy Thomas, Ann Nocenti, Ron Lim, Jim Lee, Sal Velluto and John Romita Jr., the omnibus has an RRP of £75, but there are a few deals to be had out there already!

True to form, forbiddenplanet.com hasn’t got it listed yet, but forbiddenplanet.co.uk has a fantastic 40% off on the Alan Davis cover (now a brilliant £45), if you order before 9TH FEBRUARY. They have a history of these amazing fortnight-only offers (see 40% Off The X-Men and 40% Off Captain America), and I usually advise you to order, order, order. But this time, amazon.co.uk have crept in and stolen their thunder… perhaps. Despite not listing the alternative covers – or, indeed, having a photo of either cover yet – they have an amazing pre-order price of just £38.25! But there is a problem. Amazon seems to think its RRP is actually £45. They’re pretty notorious with their prices; seriously, just google ‘amazon marvel omnibus sale’ and see the mayhem and confusion for yourselves. So can they be trusted? They don’t usually honour sales when they’ve messed up, but maybe this time, they’re being genuine.

The safe bet? Forbiddenplanet.co.uk. The possibly-worthwhile risk? Amazon.co.uk.

Let me know if you’ve pre-ordered!

Latest eBay updates (Dec’ 2010 – Jan’ 2011)

Leave a comment

Here’s a round-up of some recent bargains on eBay, so you can get a feel for the current market. How much should you be selling or buying items for? This article includes the following omnibuses:

  • Tomb of Dracula: Volume One;
  • The Amazing Spider-man: Volume One;
  • Brubaker’s Captain America: Volume One;
  • Miller’s Daredevil: Volume One;
  • Amazing Fantasy;
  • Devil Dinosaur.

Let’s start off, all the way back at the beginning of December, when a Tomb of Dracula, volume one omnibus went for the amazing price of just £50.99, with a postage price of £2.75! Despite its rarity, this edition – showing the cover of Tomb of Dracula #01 on the front – only got 2 bids. It was described as in “good condition,” and slight curling on the dust jacket could be seen in the photo. Perhaps this is the reason for its low price.

However, another Tomb omnibus sold for a similarly-low-priced $93.67 (about £58.48) on 24th December, with just four bids. It was in near mint (NM) condition, still in its shrink wrap, but high postage rates ($47.60 for UK delivery) might have cost it a few bidders.

Art by Gil Kane

Don’t worry though; it’s not all doom and gloom for the horror title. On 17th December, a NM copy went for $118.16 (c. £73.77), with three bidders battling it out to win the auction. It proves that cheap postage and packaging can attract a big market, with free US delivery and a greatly-reduced UK rate of just $9.50.

Recently, a Tomb of Dracula, volume one omnibus has been put on eBay, with a Buy-It-Now price of $349.00 (around £217.88). It is described as having “little imperfections,” and only sold – with free p+p – within the US. Its price seems a bit optimistic, but you never know…

An Amazing Spider-man, volume one omnibus went to auction on 5th December, and, despite 16 bids, achieved a price of just $51.00, or about £31.84. Still in its shrink wrap, with a NM condition, it sounds like a massive bargain. However, with an international postage rate of $45, you might think again!

Silver-acre currently have the Spider-man omnibus for £79.99 – free delivery – but it might be worth waiting to see if there are any more bargains to be had over the next few months.

Brubaker’s Captain America, volume one omnibus has been all over eBay recently; with various covers and various conditions. On 10th December, one normal edition went for $62.51 (c. £39.02), but with limited postage, only within the US. Another went for £62.00, with 10 bids, on 15th December, described as ‘used’ but NM.

The following day, a shrink-wrapped variant edition had six bidders fighting over it, with a winning price of £66, with £2.75 postage, while Silver-acre had a normal copy on a Buy-It-Now price of £59.99. Despite being classed as ‘used,’ a variant edition – featuring the cover of Captain America (vol. 5) #06 – was also described as “in excellent condition”, but only attracted one bidder, at the starting price of £47.99 (UK recorded deliver: £9).

Current Buy-It-Now prices range wildly, with one at $108.49 (c. £67.73) and another $199.99 (about £124.85), so it’s probably best for anyone looking to sell to put one on at auction. Currently, one copy has only attracted six bids, reaching just £20.05, but don’t be put off; with over three days left – and an unmet reserve – anything could happen. Most jump up large amounts in the last few minutes!

Art by Frank Miller

A couple of greatly-sought-after Miller’s Daredevil, volume one omnibuses have gone on sale these past two months. One variant, described as “new,” “sealed” and “perfect” was sold for £163.00, with 23 bidders, but the best deal ended in late December. Silver-acre had the black-and-red variant edition on sale with a Buy-It-Now price of an incredible £89.99, with free normal delivery (or £2.75 recorded). Bet you wish you’d have got that one!

Two Devil Dinosaur omnibuses went on eBay recently; one of which was shrink-wrapped with a Buy-It-Now price of $29.99 (c. £18.72). However, a high international postage rate of $25.52 may have put some prospective buyers off.

Another – read once, then stored safely – did not sell before its end date on 16th January, with a Buy-It-Now of just £40.00. An offer of £25 was declined, and so the item was relisted, with a new price of £30.00. Alongside a postage and packaging rate of £3, this went fast.

It seems that the market has little place for Kirby’s usually-popular Devil Dinosaur at the moment, so perhaps it’s a good time to nab a bargain!

Finally, to my ‘eBay Bargain of the Month’… which comes in the shape of some AmazingFantasy omnibus copies, sold through A-Place-In-Space, who are having a graphic novel sale. These NM shrink-wrapped variant editions were sold at the astonishing price of just £20.00. Unable to believe my eyes, I snapped this up, as did eight others.

Let me know of any recent deals that you’ve nabbed!

It’s pretty unbelievable that there are still copies of the very first omnibus about.

Amazon’s prices have zig-zagged recently. A couple of weeks ago, certain omnibuses, especially pre-orders, were selling for just over £10. While this didn’t last long – and all orders cancelled, thank you very much – it’s no reason to increase prices so dramatically. While the very first omnibus, Fantastic Four Volume One, was previously between £40-50, it’s now rocketed to £71.25. However, it is quite a rare edition, released in 2005, so it’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth that extra dough. Be wary, though; Amazon will probably drop the price pretty soon anyway.

And never forget to look at the independent sellers; the variant edition of Fantastic Four Volume One, by Alex Ross, is £64.99. Variants are always rarer, so grab that one up.

Their only competition is Forbiddenplanet.com, which is pretty much a wasted order. Just like Howard the Duck, Tomb of Dracula, Brubaker’s Daredevil Volume One and countless others, there’s no guarantee you’ll get the omnibus, despite their promise of receiving it within 21 days. It’s really not worth it, considering that, from my experience, they don’t even let you know it’s unavailable. This inability to obtain omnibuses apparently extends to recent releases, with the exception of Ghost Rider by Jason Aaron. Their pre-order prices, however, are quite competitive, so it’s always good to have a look at them.

There’s still the opportunity of obtaining the complete Lee/Ditko run on Amazing Spider-man from Amazon for £53.67. The price might go down a bit sometime, but it’s still a good deal.

I’m constantly surprised that copies of the brilliant Amazing Fantasy omnibus are still available. For me, that’s an omnibus everyone should have. If you’re interested, it’s best if you order from Amazon for £41.99, because there’s the option of free delivery.

Following the hit movies, Invincible Iron Man Volume One is very sought-after, so it’s a surprise Forbiddenplanet.co.uk have it for just £48.75. The same goes for Incredible Hulk, which suddenly disappeared overnight from Amazon.

I’ve recently grabbed a copy of Elektra, and highly-recommend it to all. The variant edition, with cover by Bill Sienkiewicz, is available at just £33.49 from Forbiddenplanet.co.uk.

Women of Marvel

The two volumes of Secret Wars are also popular, so you might want to snap those up. The same goes for The X-Men Volume One, a follow-up of which is released in April. Speaking of which…

Get over to Forbiddenplanet.co.uk for a massive 40% discount on The X-Men Volume Two. It’s just £45, if you order before Wednesday 10th November. This is the normal edition; the variant, by John Cassaday, is just £50.25, which is still a brilliant offer.

The most recent release, Squadron Supreme, can best be obtained from Forbiddenplanet.co.uk, at £37.51, but the price will probably go down imminently. It looks as if it may soon become hard to find though, so if you’d rather not risk missing out, order within the next couple of months.

Coming soon is the Women of Marvel omnibus (at the start of November), and, again, Forbiddenplanet.co.uk is best on price. The same can be said of all pre-orders, except the aforementioned X-Men Volume Two. Prices will probably remain the same upon release, but they’re pretty unreliable.

Walt Simonson’s Thor is sure to be a massive hit, so get those orders in now! Prices aren’t too bad at the moment (hovering around £65), despite its RRP of £95. It’s well worth it; the 1192 pages make for one of the biggest omnibuses ever. Nobody really knows when it’ll come out, though; some say January, others March, so let’s play it safe for now with February.

Of course, independent comic shops will vary omnibus prices, so it’s always worth sneaking along to the nearest one. Bristol’s Excelsior!, found on Bond Street, is brilliant at discounting hard-to-find tomes.

Feel free to add a comment regarding local comic shops, and/or discounts, alongside other omnibuses I might have missed out. There’s no official omnibus list, so getting it right is extra difficult. Fantastic Four by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch (ISBN 13: 9780785133711): Omnibus or not? It may call itself an omnibus, but at just 400 pages, it pales into comparison against the likes of New X-Men and Frank Miller’s Daredevil. But then again, there’s Devil Dinosaur

Opinions please!
