“O, Bitter Victory!”: 40% off Amazing Spider-man!

Art for ASM #49 by John Romita.

Stan Lee and John Romita’s run on Amazing Spider-man is a legendary must-read. And from April 2012, you can get ASM #39- 67, Annual #3- 5, Spectacular Spider-man Magazine (1968) #1- 2, and material from Not Brand Echh #2, 6 and 11 in a 968- page omnibus.

With an RRP of £75, the HC also features the art of Don Heck, Larry Lieber, Jim Mooney and Marie Severin, with alternate covers by Romita and Humberto Ramos.

And until Wednesday 23rd November, the Romita cover is available from forbiddenplanet.co.uk for just £45, a saving of 40%! You can get your copy here:

http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&products_id=67242

The Humberto Ramos cover – a homage to ASM #39 – can be pre-ordered from fp.co.uk for £50.25; the Romita cover is expected to  increase to this price once the promotion is over.

While Amazon.co.uk hasn’t even listed it yet, forbiddenplanet.com has the two covers for £51.74 each.

Though it’s a continuation of 2007’s first ASM omnibus – with the art of Steve Ditko – this second hardcover can be read in isolation, with such milestone issues as “How Green Was My Goblin!” – in which the Green Goblin’s true identity is first revealed – “The Sinister Shocker!” (which introduces one of my favourite villains) and “Spider-man No More!” The latter, in ASM #50, introduced the Kingpin of Crime, Wilson Fisk, a major criminal in the Marvel Universe, and partly inspired the film, Spider-man 2.

Cover art by John Romita.

Personally, it includes some of my favourite issues, so I will definitely have the omnibus in pride of place.  One of the first Spider-man comic storylines I remember is, in fact, from ASM #48- 49, a grim but thrilling tale of a very ill Spider-man facing off against Kraven the Hunter and the new (-ish) Vulture, Brackie Drago.

Coming July 2012...

Of course, the omnibus comes just in time for the release of The Amazing Spider-man film in July 2012, a reboot starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans.

Andrew Garfiled on set with Emma Stone.

Marvel has just released details of what’s coming in January 2012… and it looks like Amazon.co.uk was right with their prediction of Mark Millar’s run on Ultimate Comics Avengers. It seems that December will be a quiet time for Omnibus fans, but the New Year will continue the trend of two releases a month. Here are the solicitations for Ultimate Comics Avengers and – get ready to be excited – The Amazing Spider-man Volume Two…!

ISBN: 978-0-7851-5857-8 (Ramos cover) and ISBN: 978-0-7851-6014-4 (Romita cover).

The first ASM omnibus was released in 2007, and collected the entire Steve Ditko run, so it’s about time we had a follow-up, featuring the brilliant art of John Romita.

Amazing Spider-man #67

Obviously, with this omnibus finishing on ASM #67, there’s plenty of Lee and Romita’s legendary run remaining, so maybe we’ll see even more of the web-head in 2012. Who else is hoping for a follow-up to Uncanny X-Men Volume One or other classic omnibuses?

January’s going to be a great month – especially for those with excess money from Christmas!

“Has The Whole World Gone Mad?!?”: 40% Off Acts of Vengeance Crossovers!

Art by Alan Davis

Marvel’s July 2011 solicitations have been released, including a hefty 400-page Dark Avengers HC, a Marvel Art of Mike Deodato tome, and a Spider-man: The Death of Jean DeWolff premiere hardcover… and an Acts of Vengeance Crossovers omnibus!

 The HC follows the December 2010 release of Acts of Vengeance, which collects the main titles from the 1989/90 event, including Avengers #311-313, Thor #411-413, and Amazing Spider-man #326-329. But, with a massive 744 pages, further titles in the Marvel Universe-spanning crossover had to be collected together in this separate release. Totalling 752 pages, this omnibus will be available with two variant covers, by Alan Davis and Rob Liefeld, and collect… wait for it…

  • Fantastic Four (1961) #334-336;
  • Wolverine (1988) #19-20;
  • Dr. Strange, Sorceror Supreme (1988) #11-13;
  • Incredible Hulk (1968) #363;
  • Punisher (1987) #28-29;
  • Punisher War Journal (1988) #12-13;
  • Marc Spector: Moon Knight (1989) #8-10;
  • Daredevil (1964) #275-276;
  • Power Pack (1984) #53;
  • Alpha Flight (1983) #79-80;
  • New Mutants (1983) #84-86;
  • Uncanny X-Men #256-258;
  • X-Factor (1986) #49-50;
  • Damage Control (1989) #1-4;
  • Web Of Spider-Man #64-65.

In a plan orchestrated by Thor’s evil half-brother, Loki, the villains of the MU decide to take revenge on all those times when they’ve been defeated. Where else can you see Power Pack take on Typhoid Mary, Dr. Strange tangling with the Hobgoblin, Daredevil fighting Ultron and Iron Man teaming up with… Doctor Doom?!

Art by Bob Layton

Featuring the work of such names as Walter Simonson, Roy Thomas, Ann Nocenti, Ron Lim, Jim Lee, Sal Velluto and John Romita Jr., the omnibus has an RRP of £75, but there are a few deals to be had out there already!

True to form, forbiddenplanet.com hasn’t got it listed yet, but forbiddenplanet.co.uk has a fantastic 40% off on the Alan Davis cover (now a brilliant £45), if you order before 9TH FEBRUARY. They have a history of these amazing fortnight-only offers (see 40% Off The X-Men and 40% Off Captain America), and I usually advise you to order, order, order. But this time, amazon.co.uk have crept in and stolen their thunder… perhaps. Despite not listing the alternative covers – or, indeed, having a photo of either cover yet – they have an amazing pre-order price of just £38.25! But there is a problem. Amazon seems to think its RRP is actually £45. They’re pretty notorious with their prices; seriously, just google ‘amazon marvel omnibus sale’ and see the mayhem and confusion for yourselves. So can they be trusted? They don’t usually honour sales when they’ve messed up, but maybe this time, they’re being genuine.

The safe bet? Forbiddenplanet.co.uk. The possibly-worthwhile risk? Amazon.co.uk.

Let me know if you’ve pre-ordered!

40% off Captain America!

3 Comments

Brubaker’s latest run on Captain America heralds in a new age of red-white-and-blue greatness. But before the Winter Soldier, Heroic Age and Civil War, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby defined the future with shocking battles between the living legend and M.O.D.O.K., Baron Zemo and – of course! – the Red Skull.

Cap fans – ie. everyone – will want to get to forbiddenplanet.co.uk before Wednesday 1st December (that’s TOMORROW, folks!) to save a biiiiiig 40% on next year’s omnibus. With an RRP of £75, this brings the price down to £45! This is the regular cover only, but with art by Kirby, you’d be crazy to complain. Just in case you’re that guy, the variant is by Ron Garney, at the great price of £50.25.

It’s definitely the best deal around, with amazon.co.uk offering it for £62.57, while forbiddenplanet.co.uk has a pre-order price of £51.74. Waterstones, WHSmith and Blackwell’s haven’t even got it listed yet, but they’re likely to be higher than the rest.

The offer is sure to be a hit, with the omnibus listed as first in the top-selling graphic novels of last week (forbiddenplanet.co.uk).

The 856-page hardback collects Tales of Suspense #59- 99, Captain America #100-113, and NOT Brand Echh #3, each with their letter pages, by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Roy Thomas, John Romita, and many more. And if that’s not enough, there’s a comics master class with design-genius Jim Steranko, whose work is also collected there.

The omnibus should be released in May 2011, according to forbiddenplanet.co.uk and amazon.co.uk, but January if you believe forbiddenplanet.com. No idea where they’re getting this from, but it’s probably wrong.

If you miss the fantastic deal, forbiddenplanet.co.uk is expected to keep the price at £50.25 until the book becomes out-of-print.

Hi! Welcome to The Marvel Omnibus Guide!

This site will provide you with all the latest information on Marvel Comics’ omnibus editions, including:

  • Creator information:

From writers to inkers, artists to editors, seek out Lee and Ditko’s Amazing Spider-man run, or go with something a bit more contemporary like Ed Brubaker’s Immortal Iron Fist.

  • How much you should expect to pay (and sell):

Forget RRPs. The world of the omnibus is a mad one; one day, you can pay massive prices for that out-of-print (OOP) edition and the next, Amazon have gone crazy and are selling them all off for a quarter of their actual price. Seek out those deals and make sure you’re not ripped off. Please remember, all conversion rates (£ and $) are correct at time.

  • Updated price list:

A frequently-updated list of omnibuses (both previously-released and on pre-order), finding you the best deal on the ‘net!

  • Background information:

What influenced each story? And what’s happening in the character’s world? Is the character popular in this medium, and how fast do they go out-of-print?

  • Release dates:

Plan out your pre-orders, and compare the best prices. Marvel’s pretty notorious with these, but all the latest solicits will be as accurate as they can be!

  • Issue numbers and page counts:

Fill in those missing runs, and get quantity as well as quality; something to consider when spending £75 on one!

  • Follow-up omnibuses:

What to read next. After finishing Bendis and Maleev’s complete Daredevil, go straight to Brubaker and Lark’s run, or learn when the next one’s coming out, and what tie-ins are available.

  • Why it’s important, and why you should read it:

Whether it’s a character-defining run, a massive milestone, or just a script by Frank Miller, learn why each omnibus is special, and why it should grab you.

I’m Philip Bates, a freelance writer, who just loves Marvel. In fact, I’ve loved Marvel since the age of three, influenced by the 1990s Spider-man and X-Men television series. My favourite characters and creators change every day, but I’ve always loved John Romita Jr., especially his Spider-man run alongside J. Michael Straczynski. My first omnibus was Daredevil by Bendis and Maleev, but my most sought-after is the first volume of Miller’s run on the same character.

A copy of this post can be found on the ‘About’ section, with further information on why to buy Marvel omnibuses, and a updated price list.
