“Welcome back, Carter”: 40% off the Warlord of Mars!

Leave a comment

February’s John Carter, Warlord of Mars Omnibus release is an unexpected one, though there is a new film in the mix, but I’m sure will be welcomed by many. The science-fiction series ran from 1977 to 1979, and won the 1978 Eagle Award for ‘Favourite New Title.’

The omnibus collects John Carter, Warlord Of Mars #1- 28 and Annual #1 -3, written by fan-favourites Marv Wolfman, Chris Claremont, Peter B. Gillis, Bill Mantlo and Alan Weiss, and pencilled by Gil Kane – who provides the cover to the HC – Dave Cockrum, Carmine Infantino, Ernie Colon, Frank Miller, Mike Vosburg, Walter Simonson, Ross Andru, Larry Hama, Sal Buscema, Ernie Chan and Alan Weiss. English artist, Alan Davis, best known for his work on Fantastic Four, provides a variant cover.

The 624-page omnibus will have an RRP of £75, but you can pre-order it from forbiddenplanet.co.uk for £45 – a saving of 40% – if you pre-order it by tomorrow, 14th September – so what are you waiting for?!

If you’re reading this on 15th September though… don’t panic! Amazon.co.uk has it available for £45.54:

Thanks to Matschi for commenting on my previous X-Men post, recommending bookdepository.co.uk, which has the John Carter omnibus for £45.54 too.

Alternatively, the Alan Davis cover is available from forbiddenplanet.co.uk for £50.25, which is what the Gil Kane one will probably rise to after tomorrow. Forbiddenplanet.com has it on pre-order for £51.74.

Burrough's original 'A Princess of Mars' book

The series takes place during the novel, A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, which is being turned into a comic books series by Roger Langridge (Thor: The Mighty Avenger; Doctor Who Magazine) and Skottie Young (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; New Warriors: Reality Check) this month.

“With our new partnership with Marvel Entertainment, we believe we have found the best creative force to revive the thrills and adventures in the 21st Century of the legendary John Carter of Mars. We are looking forward to introducing this original interplanetary adventurer to a new generation of fans and await the first issue with great anticipation,” said James Sullos, President of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

NOTES:

Bold:     Best deal.

–:           Omnibus not available/ OOP (out-of-print)

V:            Volume.

Fp:          Forbidden Planet ie. fp.co.uk =  forbiddenplanet.co.uk.

Italics:   Item not in stock at fp.com, but available to order. There is no guarantee that you will get the omnibus, so it will not be considered the best deal, even if the price is the lowest, unless amazon.co.uk and fp.co.uk do not have stocks available either.

Underlined:        Variant edition only. Generally, variants copies have a more limited printing, so are rarer to find.

The Evolutionary War!

Leave a comment

This September, The Evolutionary War is collected in a 472-page omnibus, with two covers by Lee Garbett and John Buscema.

Buscema cover

The storyline – which focuses on one of the world’s leading geneticists, The High Evolutionary, declaring war on the Earth – was the first of its kind; a crossover spread over several annuals in 1988, from X-Factor Annual #03 to Avengers Annual #17. This tradition continued with storylines like Atlantis Attacks and Lifeform, the former of which has also been released in omnibus format.

Okay, so with an RRP of £55.99, how can you save a bit of money? Well, here are the current offers from the ‘Big Three,’ as I’ve taken to calling them:

forbiddenplanet.com: £38.63.

forbiddenplanet.co.uk: £37.51.

amazon.co.uk: £41.99.

As you can see, it’s best to pre-order with fp.co.uk, but as it’s released in September, it might be worth waiting to see if it drops down a bit. There’s a chance it might, but only by a couple of quid.

In other news…

In preparation for the upcoming Thor movie – which looks just incredible – the new Walter Simonson Omnibus should be on shelves nationwide. It also looks like Forbidden Planet pre-orders have been sent out too. It’s an extremely popular run and a massive omnibus, weighing in at 1192 pages of Odinson action. It’s worth getting just to see Thor as a frog, right?

For Asgard...!

Comic Book Resources are calling the new Thor movie, which previews next Easter Monday in the UK, the “best Marvel film yet.”

Come back soon; it looks like October will see the release of several exciting omnibuses…

“Has The Whole World Gone Mad?!?”: 40% Off Acts of Vengeance Crossovers!

Art by Alan Davis

Marvel’s July 2011 solicitations have been released, including a hefty 400-page Dark Avengers HC, a Marvel Art of Mike Deodato tome, and a Spider-man: The Death of Jean DeWolff premiere hardcover… and an Acts of Vengeance Crossovers omnibus!

 The HC follows the December 2010 release of Acts of Vengeance, which collects the main titles from the 1989/90 event, including Avengers #311-313, Thor #411-413, and Amazing Spider-man #326-329. But, with a massive 744 pages, further titles in the Marvel Universe-spanning crossover had to be collected together in this separate release. Totalling 752 pages, this omnibus will be available with two variant covers, by Alan Davis and Rob Liefeld, and collect… wait for it…

  • Fantastic Four (1961) #334-336;
  • Wolverine (1988) #19-20;
  • Dr. Strange, Sorceror Supreme (1988) #11-13;
  • Incredible Hulk (1968) #363;
  • Punisher (1987) #28-29;
  • Punisher War Journal (1988) #12-13;
  • Marc Spector: Moon Knight (1989) #8-10;
  • Daredevil (1964) #275-276;
  • Power Pack (1984) #53;
  • Alpha Flight (1983) #79-80;
  • New Mutants (1983) #84-86;
  • Uncanny X-Men #256-258;
  • X-Factor (1986) #49-50;
  • Damage Control (1989) #1-4;
  • Web Of Spider-Man #64-65.

In a plan orchestrated by Thor’s evil half-brother, Loki, the villains of the MU decide to take revenge on all those times when they’ve been defeated. Where else can you see Power Pack take on Typhoid Mary, Dr. Strange tangling with the Hobgoblin, Daredevil fighting Ultron and Iron Man teaming up with… Doctor Doom?!

Art by Bob Layton

Featuring the work of such names as Walter Simonson, Roy Thomas, Ann Nocenti, Ron Lim, Jim Lee, Sal Velluto and John Romita Jr., the omnibus has an RRP of £75, but there are a few deals to be had out there already!

True to form, forbiddenplanet.com hasn’t got it listed yet, but forbiddenplanet.co.uk has a fantastic 40% off on the Alan Davis cover (now a brilliant £45), if you order before 9TH FEBRUARY. They have a history of these amazing fortnight-only offers (see 40% Off The X-Men and 40% Off Captain America), and I usually advise you to order, order, order. But this time, amazon.co.uk have crept in and stolen their thunder… perhaps. Despite not listing the alternative covers – or, indeed, having a photo of either cover yet – they have an amazing pre-order price of just £38.25! But there is a problem. Amazon seems to think its RRP is actually £45. They’re pretty notorious with their prices; seriously, just google ‘amazon marvel omnibus sale’ and see the mayhem and confusion for yourselves. So can they be trusted? They don’t usually honour sales when they’ve messed up, but maybe this time, they’re being genuine.

The safe bet? Forbiddenplanet.co.uk. The possibly-worthwhile risk? Amazon.co.uk.

Let me know if you’ve pre-ordered!
